The Church and LGBT Rights

Yesterday, the pastor of the church I attend gave a report on the events of a clergywoman's conference she had attended a couple of weeks ago. The occasion for the conference was a celebration of 50 years of full clergy rights for women in our denomination.

One of the issues discussed was the fact that LGBT people do not yet have these rights and don't even have full membership rights. In fact, a pastor removed a member from membership based on the member's sexual orientation.

I listened to this sermon and thought about how far I personally have come in the past three years. Three years ago, I would've stood up and walked out on such a sermon, and been proud to do so. Now, I support civil rights for LGBT people; well, all people, actually.

So, I guess improvement is possible, and I look forward to it happening in our denomination.
